Remembering Lord David Lipsey, Trinity Laban Honorary Companion (1948-2025)

We are saddened to hear of the death of Lord David Lipsey, Trinity Laban Honorary Companion, and former Chair of our Board of Governors.

Lord Lipsey, who chaired the Board from 2012 to 2017, was a transformative leader whose passion, insight and unwavering advocacy helped shape Trinity Laban into the institution it is today. His visionary leadership forged a distinctive path, celebrating innovation while upholding the highest standards of excellence in music and dance education.

With a remarkable career spanning politics, journalism, and public service, Lord Lipsey brought a wealth of experience and intellectual rigour to Trinity Laban. His partnership with Principal Professor Anthony Bowne and the senior leadership team led to significant milestones, including the successful application for Taught Degree Awarding Powers, participation in the Research Excellence Framework, and a reshaping of the institution’s governance. His advocacy extended beyond Trinity Laban; his interventions in the House of Lords contributed to key improvements in the Higher Education and Research Bill, benefiting the entire sector.

Though a long-standing champion of classical music, particularly the piano, Lord Lipsey embraced the full breadth of Trinity Laban’s artistic offer, developing a profound appreciation for contemporary dance and jazz. His greatest joy as Chair came from supporting the next generation of artists, and he and his wife Margaret were especially delighted by the successes of our talented pianists. The David Lipsey Room at King Charles Court stands as a lasting tribute to his contributions and love for Trinity Laban.

A tireless advocate for classical music in Parliament as Chair of the All Party Classical Music Group, Lord Lipsey revitalised the group and ensured its ongoing influence. His eloquent defence of international and disabled students in the House of Lords reflected his deep commitment to access, inclusion, and artistic excellence.

Lord Lipsey was a mentor, a champion, and a friend to the Trinity Laban community. We are profoundly grateful for his legacy and his belief in our vision.
